scar therapy

What is Scar Therapy?

Scar massage therapy plays an important role after surgery, supporting both immediate recovery and long-term healing. It’s increasingly recognised as a key part of post-operative care, as your scar is something you’ll live with for life and it benefits from ongoing attention and support.

Regular scar massage can help improve the way a scar looks and feels, while also addressing or preventing issues such as adhesions. It encourages better movement within the tissue, enhances sensation, and supports healthy healing within the body. This is particularly important, as untreated adhesions can lead to discomfort, restricted mobility, and other longer-term complications.

Benefits of Scar Therapy

  • Improvement of mobility and function where a scar causes restriction
  • Promotion of functional and cosmetic changes
  • Reduction of pain and sensitivity caused by irritation and restricted nerves
  • Restoring sensation to numb areas
  • Softening of the scar and surrounding area
  • Stimulating change to scar tissue on the skin surface, and fibrosis or adhesions in the underlying tissue.
  • Support for emotional well-being through therapeutic touch

Results vary, but early treatment can maximise cosmetic improvement. Newer scars may heal faster, while older scars can still benefit as the body responds to gentle stimulation. Scar Therapy can soften fibrosis, improve texture, increase tissue suppleness, and enhance overall appearance — though scars cannot be completely removed.
