Manual Lymphatic Drainage (or MLD) is a specialised massage of precise, light rhythmical hand movements which gently stretch the skin in a circular motion along the lymphatic pathways.
This pumping movement stimulates the contractions of the lymphatic vessels and promotes the flow of fluid from the tissues into the lymphatic system. The fluid is carried to lymph nodes where it is filtered and cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products and then returned to the blood stream. A healthy lymphatic system is fundamental to our immunity as it carries white blood cells which help fight infection.
If performed correctly, with correct pressure, speed and direction, MLD can enhance lymphatic drainage and facilitate recovery.
The slow, gentle rhythmic movements of the therapy are also effective in calming the nervous system, aiding relaxation and helping to alleviate pain. It is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during treatment. Many patients report an improved immune system and enhanced healing after having regular treatments.
The Dr Vodder technique is a highly respected method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), recognised worldwide for its precision, safety, and effectiveness and supported by MLDUK.org.
Developed by Dr Emil Vodder, it uses gentle, rhythmic movements to stimulate the lymphatic system and support natural fluid drainage. It is considered a gold standard because of its proven results in reducing swelling, supporting post-surgical recovery, and improving lymphatic function. This technique provides a professional, consistent approach that ensures clients receive safe, high-quality care while promoting comfort, healing, and overall wellbeing.
